12 Years after 3.11 : A Lesson Learned
The Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami, or 3.11, occurred on March 11, 2011, marking the 12th anniversary of the devastating tsunami that devastated eastern Japan on that day.
The areas hit most by the earthquake and tsunami were the prefectures of Fukushima, Miyagi, and Iwate. There has been continual rebuilding during these 12 years. The government and academics are working together to introduce two new ideas: Green and Gray Infrastructure.
Preparedness for natural disasters, however, is much more critical than the mitigation structure’s emphasis on prevention. The accounts of Kamaishi City, Iwate Prefecture, survivors from kindergartens, elementary schools, middle schools, and local citizens reveal this to be the case.
However, several students and instructors are among the casualties at Okawa Elementary School in Ishinomaki City, Miyagi Prefecture. In fact, climbing the steep slope in the school’s backyard is part of their annual activity.
The tragic events at Okawa Elementary School should be remembered as a tribute to the lives lost and a warning against procrastination in the face of calamity.
